Walk on the planks

When your way is paved, let’s say, in wood,
you’d probably prefer to go along.
An error on the side won’t be much good,
the ground might be more soft than strong.

The purpose of such planks across the plain
is certainly to not sink in the mud around.
So any person who is fit and sane
walks on the planks and thus stays dry and sound.

Although experience may shout a warning:
water and frost on wooden planks, beware!
And on smart people it is dawning
that it is better to step on with care.
